Not only is Stephen C. Foster State Park surrounded by the largest blackwater swamp in North America, but it also is a designated Dark Sky Park!
Stephen C. Foster State Park in Georgia achieved the highest ranking from the International Dark Sky Association for the minimal light pollution and visibility of the sky.
The park prepared for this designation for months by removing street lights, switching bumps to directional lighting, and even installing lights that are motion-activated rather than always on.
All of this means that guests will be able to enjoy some of the best night sky views in Georgia as they camp overnight in the park.
The campground is open year-round and offers cabins, cottages, and primitive sites. Reservations are required for anyone looking to spend the night in the park.
