The cabin is the only remaining authentic log cabin in the city of Detroit, built in 1885 for Senator Thomas Palmer and his wife, Lizzie Merrill Palmer. In its heyday, the cabin was used as a party venue by the couple.

During this era, the space that now makes up Palmer Park was considered lush countryside outside the burgeoning city. When you drop by today, you can easily imagine the park’s original rural atmosphere.

The log cabin itself is rarely open to the public, though renovation efforts are underway to restore its original charms and bolster its ability to host indoor events. For now, guests can admire the building from outside.

Despite many years of prior neglect, the cabin continues to be lovingly updated by the People for Palmer Park. In fact, the organization even hosts a Log Cabin Day to give locals a rare chance to step inside.

If you are lucky enough to step inside (or even just peek in the windows), you’ll notice a beautifully designed Victorian aesthetic. While the exterior is rusticly inspired, there are stunning touches awaiting within.
