Do you have a fascination with crimes, unsolved murders, and shows and/or podcasts of either of the above? Sadly, Colorado has seen its fair share of gruesomeness, from the unsolved murder of JonBenet Ramsey to the bizarre case of cannibal Alferd Packer and beyond. In addition to the crimes themselves, Colorado is home to a bizarre serial killer-themed hotel that is equal parts haunted, fascinating, and downright dark.
Located in historic Victor, the Black Monarch Hotel is hauntingly beautiful with an array of edgy rooms with equally unique ambiance.
Originally built in the late 1800s, the Black Monarch was a popular gold rush casino, brothel, and saloon, bringing in nightly guests from both near and far.
Sadly, the Black Monarch — once dubbed the "finest gentlemen’s club west of the Mississippi" — suffered a devastating fire in 1899, leading to the building's desertion and, eventually, alleged hauntings.
Recently purchased and re-opened, the Black Monarch has taken on a new life of its own.
The recent resurrection is thanks to a complete renovation and to rooms inspired by the likes of iconic serial killers, including Queen Elizabeth Báthory (a Hungarian queen who is said to have murdered hundreds of servants and then bathed in their blood) and "America’s first serial killer," H.H. Holmes.
Not a fan of dark and gore? No problem, as the Black Monarch boasts a couple of lighter rooms as well, like the one inspired by inventor Nikola Tesla, who is said to have wired the original building.
Whichever room you occupy, be sure to keep your eyes and ears peeled, as it is said you can see lights flickering. There are also firsthand accounts of the sounds of screams, laughter, and/or footsteps when no one is around.
Rates at the Black Monarch currently begin at $96 per night (subject to change) and can be booked via their website or by calling (720) 585-1709.
Address: 301 Victor Avenue, Victor, CO, 80860
