There is something incredibly unique and charming about an old building, especially when it was built when Colorado became a state! Thankfully, there are plenty of these historic buildings that remain today that give a glimpse into our Wild West past, including the incredible, must-see Strater Hotel, one of the most historic hotels in the U.S.
Initially opened in 1887, the Strater Hotel was (and still is!) the grand dame of the west, beginning with its Victorian-style architecture complete with 376,000 native red bricks and hand-carved sandstone cornices and sills.
If you think the exterior is impressive, the interior will drop your jaw, as it boasts intricate handcrafted woodwork, a grand lobby with chandeliers and pristine ceilings, and 88 stunning rooms.
Unlike modern chains, each room at the Strater Hotel is chock-full of charm and character, a la period wallpaper, antique fixtures and furniture, and incredibly comfortable beds and linens.
Named one of the most historic hotels in America, the Strater Hotel also houses a well-known and revered collection of American Victorian walnut antiques.
In addition to the rooms themselves, the Strater is a must-visit for its on-site amenities, like the legendary Diamond Belle Saloon, live entertainment, and other special events.
Located in Durango, there is plenty to see and do around the Strater, including shopping around charming downtown, climbing aboard the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, or visiting the nearby Mesa Verde National Park.
