There’s no need to hop on a plane to have an incredible vacation when there are so many incredible inns in Northern California. While inns and hotels are very similar, many inns offer a special experience with many amenities and a more personal touch. Some inns are like small five-star hotels, while others prefer staying at a friend’s house. In small towns and out-of-the-way destinations, you are more likely to find inns than major hotel chains. 1. Agate Cove Inn - Mendocino

Few other places in the world offer stunning views like you’ll find at the Agate Cove Inn in Mendocino. This two-acre property is perched on the cliff above the ocean. The inn has been in operation for more than 30 years, but the property itself has been in use since 1860.

2. The Ink House - St. Helena

You won’t find doilies in this inn– the super comfortable and luxurious decor looks straight out of a magazine. This luxury inn in a very swanky area of wine country was once the home of California pioneer Theron H. Ink. The Ink House makes for a great getaway for the wine and food lover. Enjoy the European breakfast, have access to the fully-stocked chef’s kitchen, and arrange private tours of Napa destinations.

3. Bordeaux Inn - Lodi

Every room in this cozy four-bedroom farmhouse is a suite with a queen or cal king-sized bed. Bordeaux Inn is a great location to explore central valley wineries. Guests are also just a short walk away from multiple restaurants and bars. Frequent guests say the hosts are welcoming and friendly.

4. Inn of the Lost Coast - Shelter Cove

At this inn you can get away from it all and enjoy the sound of the waves. Located on Shelter Cove, this inn makes a great starting place to explore the Lost Coast– and they’re pet friendly. You just have to pay a non-refundable $15 fee and the host will greet your pet with a treat.

5. Historic Requa Inn - Klamath

Built in 1914 in the Redwood National Forest, Historic Requa Inn is right on the Klamath River. Each room is different, so be sure to ask for a room with a view of the river. For an additional charge guests can enjoy breakfast and a chef prepared farm-to-table dinner on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

6. Benbow Historic Inn - Garberville

This large and fancy inn is an unexpected surprise as you drive north on 101 through tiny towns in redwood country. Benbow Historic Inn was opened in 1926. At that time it was called Hotel Benbow. The Inn combines the great outdoors with top-notch amenities in a historic setting. Famous historical guests include Eleanor Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, and Lord Halifax. The beautiful inn sits on the banks of the Eel River and is a short drive from Avenue of the Giants.

7. Gingerbread Mansion Inn - Ferndale

Right in the middle of historic Ferndale in Northern California sits one of California’s most photographed homes. Constructed in 1895, the 11 room inn offers guests complimentary tea, wine and a variety of homemade treats. Gingerbread Mansion Inn also sells gift certificates– a great idea for that person who has everything.
