The Mother Road (a.k.a. Route 66) is a virtual playground of eccentric and outrageous roadside oddities, and this one follows suit. While most people traveling on Route 66 through Arizona don't stop at, or research, every single attraction, this one is worth checking out.
The Grand Canyon Caverns is one of the largest dry caverns in the world and lies 210 feet below the Earth's surface.
While many people may have heard about this natural wonder in Arizona... there's a lesser-known attraction within the caverns: a single motel room 200 feet underground.
The Caverns Inn offers above-ground rooms, a bunk house, and RV/campsites... but few realize, as they're passing the big yellow "Caverns Inn" sign on Route 66, that a single one-of-a-kind experience is available.
Guests of the cave motel room take an elevator 20 stories down into the cavern. The year-round temperature is 56 degrees and there is no natural light. One other thing: the caverns are said to be haunted.
And if that isn't creepy enough, the cave motel room is located in a massive dungeon-like space that's 200 feet wide, 400 feet long and has a ceiling that is 70 feet high. The space is shared with the cavern stage, shown in the foreground of the image below.
Here's a look at the Cave Motel Room. The room comes complete with two queen beds, a pullout sofa, books, a television, and a restroom that's located behind the bookshelf. Some guests bring their own extra bedding in anticipation of the super cool temperatures.
Do you have the courage it takes to spend the night 200 feet below the surface in a cavern that's rumored to be haunted? We'd love to know!
The Cavern's Inn and the Cave Motel Room are located at the Grand Canyon Caverns. The address is 115 Mile Marker AZ-66, Peach Springs, AZ 86434. Learn more, and book the cave room, on the official website of the Cavern's Inn.
