How does ice skating beneath starry skies on a real, outdoor rink sound to round out your holiday season? I admit I did a doubletake when I learned this is even an option in our state. As it turns out, you can do that and more with a winter getaway in Albertville, Alabama at its state-of-the-art Sand Mountain Park and Amphitheater. You can even book a comfortable stay onsite at its RV Park presented by River Rocks Landing.
The multipurpose park opened in the spring of 2022. Spanning 130 acres, it holds a world of features and amenities.
At the RV park adjacent to the amphitheater, guests can choose among 17 spacious spots. Each space is 50 feet long and 13 feet wide. Options include pull-through or back-in sites, and all include water and sewer hookups.
You can plan a stay to suit your schedule with daily, weekly, and monthly rates available (one month max). Also, each spot includes two complimentary day passes to the park and its amenities.
Outdoors, there are playgrounds, more than four miles of trails, a dog park, and courts for basketball, tennis, and sand volleyball. Despite the water park being closed for winter, you can swim in the indoor pool. Also, there's an indoor fitness center for workouts.
When winter arrives, the park transforms its amphitheater into Sand Mountain Skate, the grandest real outdoor ice rink in North Alabama.
If you want to hit the ice (of course you do!), the fee is $14 if you need to rent skates. If you bring your own pair, it's just $7 to lace up and glide along.
Meanwhile, no one in your crew has to go hungry if you didn't have time to stop for dinner beforehand. A concession area in the main tent sells freshly prepared, hot food and beverages that include warm ciders, hot chocolates, and adult beverages.
You can make your visit to Sand Mountain Skate extra special with an igloo rental. These spaces provide a cozy retreat for your group while adding an extra touch of comfort and exclusivity. Check with the park on purchasing a Penguin Party Package, which includes an igloo, snacks, and a steamy hot chocolate bar.
You can find more details about booking your RV space on the Sand Mountain Park & Amphitheater website. Keep up with Sand Mountain Skate dates and hours on the Sand Mountain Skate website or visit the Sand Mountain Skate page on Facebook. If you don't have an RV and just want to check out the skating rink and park, consider a stay at the highly-rated Hampton Inn Albertville.
