Overall, Wisconsin is a pretty safe place. In fact, a recent study named the Badger State the 12th safest state in the U.S. And if that’s not enough to make you feel protected, you’ll want to consider a move to one of the following communities, which have been deemed the safest cities in Wisconsin.
The results are in, and according to Safewise, the safest towns in Wisconsin for 2022 are Oconomowoc (#1), Evansville, Grand Rapids, Town of Geneva, Town of Mukwonago, Cottage Grove, Hartland, Fox Valley Metro, Kronenwetter, and Sheboygan Falls (#10).
Safewise actually ranked the top 20 safest cities in Wisconsin. Here are the rest of the state’s safest cities, according to Safewise: Sturtevant (#11), Town of Delavan, Oregon,
McFarland, Waupun, Hobart-Lawrence, Waunakee, Mount Horeb, Milton, and Edgerton (#20).
Before we delve into the safest cities in Wisconsin, let’s take a look at the state overall.
Wisconsin’s crime rates are lower than the national average; however, The Badger State was ne of only nine states to see an increase in both violent and property crime rates.
The safest cities in Wisconsin boast some of the lowest reported crime rates in the entire country.
Within the East North Central region, Wisconsin has some of the lowest crime rates. The Badger State has the second-lowest violent crime rate behind Ohio (3.1) and the second-lowest property crime rate behind Michigan (13.6).
For 2022, the town of Oconomowoc claimed the spot as the safest place to live in Wisconsin. it reported only one violent crime and just 11 property crimes this year.
Deserving of the recognition, the small town had virtually zero violent crimes, and property crime rates of 1.2 per 1,000 people.
It’s worth noting that none of the safest cities in Wisconsin reported high violent crime rates.
The violent crime rate in the safest cities is 0.5 incidents per 1,000 people, less than a sixth of the state rate (3.2).
Property crime rates were also pretty low among the safest cities in the Badger State, despite a slight increase over last year.
Surprisingly, studies show that Wisconsinites don’t feel completely safe in the Badger State.
Roughly 8 out of 10 residents think crime is rising. However, according to statistics, it’s the opposite - both violent crime rates and property crime rates are on the decline.
In total, 90% of the safest cities reported 10 or fewer total violent crimes this year -- none reported more than 16. Translation? Wisconsin is, by and large, a very safe state in which to reside!
