In the 1960s, the world was on edge. The threat of nuclear attack loomed large and the United States wasn’t taking any chances. It developed a massive defense system to combat enemy aircraft and missiles, which included installing missile silos in the heartland. A community park in Waukesha offers a good look at an abandoned Wisconsin missile site. A short stroll will teach you more about a fascinating yet disturbing chapter in American history. The suprise waiting for you at Hillcrest Park in Waukesha is an abandoned military base in Wisconsin.
Nike missile bases first started appearing in the Milwaukee area in the 1950s.
They were part of an extensive defense system to combat threats posed by new technology, like nuclear ballistic missiles and bombers that could travel around the globe.
There were eight missile sites placed around the Milwaukee area...
...including one in Waukesha that was dubbed M-74.
The base was in operation from 1956-1971...
... and active military personnel were stationed at this fortified Wisconsin military site.
The site was abandoned more than 50 years ago, and today it's surrounded by residential neighborhoods.
It’s been transformed into a beautiful Wisconsin city park that’s open to the public.
There was an Integrated Fire Control site in the area that’s now the city park.
It had ground-based radars and computers and was established to track enemy aircraft. A launcher area was located about a mile south.
A walk in the park will take you past the former location of the mess hall, radio towers, a blast building, and barracks.
If you’re interested in Wisconsin history, the U.S. military, or the Cold War, you’ll find the site fascinating.
