Everyone has their quirks. Living in Washington State we tend to embrace being a little different. We might not be the only ones with these habits, but sometimes it certainly feels that way. Here are eight things Washingtonians do that some might find strange:
1. Say “state” after Washington when they’re traveling and someone asks where they’re from
Do you know anyone from any other state who has to do this? We’re giving you the side-eye, D.C.
2. Wear shorts when it’s 55 degrees outside
After an extremely cold winter, that first real spring day feels downright warm.
3. Wait for an hour or more to enjoy an amazing weekend brunch
Yes, we could cook at home, but we can’t make anything like Spokane’s Frank’s Diner or Marcia’s Silver Spoon Cafe in Tacoma could serve us.
4. Avoid using umbrellas when it rains
There's a joke that you can spot a tourist in Washington by their umbrella use. How did this become a thing?
5. Eat cream cheese on our hot dogs
We might not be the only ones who do this, but it’s called the "Seattle Dog" for a reason. And Seattle isn’t the only city to sell this surprisingly delicious dog - you can get them at The Red Hot in Tacoma.
6. We have some really weird laws
In Washington, it is illegal to harass Bigfoot and to walk around in public if you have a cold. We definitely break the second rule. And well, the first one... Why is Washington State so weird?
7. We take coffee to the next level
This is the beautiful Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room in Seattle, because regular Starbucks just wasn't enough anymore.
8. We embrace our oddities
From the Fremont Troll to Prosser’s Gravity Hill and the notorious Gum Wall at Pike Place Market, we take pride in our unique attractions. Life in Washington State is always interesting.
One thing we will never regret about living in Washington is access to beautiful natural areas, like Dog Mountain:
