This Washington destination may pique your interest if you love history and the great outdoors. Pioneer Park is the oldest park in Walla Walla, but that's not the only thing that makes it worth exploring. Curated gardens, a serene pond, ping pong tables, and even an aviary are all hidden within the sprawling grounds. This historic gem is the perfect setting for beloved family memories!
Located near Whitman College, Pioneer Park is a fantastic option for families to enjoy a delightful— and totally free— day trip.
It is also the oldest park in Walla Walla, established in 1902. As you follow the trails that circumvent the park, it's fascinating to imagine past residents enjoying the same trees and flower beds that modern visitors enjoy today. Providing citizens with beautiful public spaces was a priority to Edwardian cities, who saw these recreational grounds as vital to people's moral and physical well-being.
Many of the park's original structures remain, including the Band Stand, which still hosts live music on special occasions.
Ducking through the various nooks and crannies of the park leads to delightful discoveries and moments of privacy. The mature trees, moss-covered stonework, and European influence convey a sense of age that's palpable as you explore the grounds.
Dense beds of flowers surround a smattering of ponds that provide seasonal refuge to wild birds.
Also sprinkled throughout the park are historical artifacts, like this canon, and sculptures. Still, there's lots to do for families with kids or lovers of activities like myself. Visitors have access to ping pong tables, pickleball courts, and playground equipment.
Best of all, there's a free aviary! I can easily spend an hour enjoying the company of the park's avian residents, who are treated like royalty in their well-planted enclosure.
At the oldest park in Walla Walla, you'll feel like you're walking through Washington's past. While park-goers of the Edwardian period might have dressed differently than modern visitors, we share a lovely common ground — one that transcends time — in our love of the great outdoors.
