There are lots of famous people from Texas, so it only makes sense that there would also be lots of famous people buried in Texas. One of them is the legendary Buddy Holly, whose short career (and, sadly, short life) turned him into a rock 'n roll legend. You can pay him your respects at the City of Lubbock Cemetery - and don't forget to bring a guitar pick with you! Find out why below.
The City of Lubbock Cemetery seems like any other cemetery at first glance, but rock 'n roll fans know that to be anything from the truth.
Legendary singer-songwriter Buddy Holly, who was born Charles Hardin Holley in Lubbock and died at just 22 years old in a fateful plane crash on February 3, 1959, is buried here, and many people come visit his gravesite each year.
Holly's gravesite sees so many visitors, in fact, that the cemetery erected a signpost with directions to it.
You shouldn't have any trouble finding your way around.
You've probably heard the phrase "The Day the Music Died," which refers to the plane crash that killed not only Holly, but two other musicians as well.
Ritchie Valens and J. P. Richardson also died in the crash, which happened near the town of Clear Lake, Iowa.
As for the discrepancy in the spelling of the singer's last name, "Holley" is technically correct.
In 1956, Decca Records misspelled it, and "Holly" forever stuck.
Buddy Holly is buried next to his mother and father, Lawrence and Ella Holley.
It is seen as customary for visitors to leave a guitar pick on the singer's grave to honor and pay tribute to him.
The cemetery is usually quiet and lonely, so perhaps you'll want to take a contemplative stroll during your time here.
As your walking around, make it a point to stop by the grave of Mac Davis, another Lubbock-born musician who was buried here following his death in 2020.
The star is known for composing music for Elvis Presley in the early days of his career, including such hits as "A Little Less Conversation."
