We're no strangers to finding history around every corner here in TX, and we love getting out and experiencing places where that history can truly come alive. Tucked away in a small town, Riley's Tavern in Texas is one of the oldest bars in the state - in fact, it was the very first (legal) watering hole in the Lone Star State after Prohibition was repealed. Opened in 1933, this iconic landmark in New Braunfels is still standing, and you can practically feel the decades of history when you step inside! The bar also has an incredible food menu, making it a totally bucket list-worthy stop next time you're visiting the Hill Country.
Riley's Tavern in New Braunfels may look like your average dive bar, but just wait until you hear about its rich and storied past.
In September 1933 - the same year Prohibition was repealed - 17-year-old James Curtis Riley was the first person in Texas to obtain a beer license after it became legal to sell alcohol again. The building actually dates to the mid-1800s; it was known as the Galloway Saloon before Prohibition.
Between 1933 and 1977, farmers, cattle ranchers, and railroad workers flocked to this historic tavern in Texas to enjoy frosty brews and good conversation.
After all, many neighboring counties were still dry, so Riley's was one of the only watering holes around.
Mr. Riley himself operated the tavern until he became too ill to run the business in 1991.
Riley passed away the following year, but his legacy is still going strong. Today, the oldest bar in Texas is as popular as ever, with live music, classic car shows, and even cottage rentals!
Regulars can often be found shooting pool and catching up with one another between sips of their favorite drink.
You'll also see a shuffleboard table, horseshoes, and a jukebox.
The drink selection is plentiful, featuring beer, cocktails, and a variety of other beverages.
Seasonal and holiday offerings, such as Irish-inspired drinks for St. Patrick's Day, offer a change of pace from the standard menu.
Riley's also offers delicious eats like Philly cheesesteak, pizza, pulled pork sandwiches, and other hearty bites. The food truck on-site does not disappoint.
We can't imagine a better way to sop up your sips.
Crawfish season is a big deal at Riley's (and all across Texas, if we're being honest).
Make sure you stop by in the spring to see all the different ways they serve up this Southern delicacy.
Visit the tavern's website or give it a follow on Facebook for more information, including current hours and a full menu.
