In 2014, ads and signs appeared listing the entire small town of Swett, South Dakota, for sale. The town consisted of about six acres of land and contained a few buildings. The asking price in 2014 was $399,000, then dropped in price the following year to just $250,000. Coverage of the listing made international news. Many people expressed interest in the Swett, SD property, including a Russian movie company wanting to film there and people who just plain wanted to be their own self-appointed mayor.
The buildings then remaining in Swett included an abandoned house that was supposedly haunted, an empty shop, and a bar. Some of the potential buyers were considering buying the entire town for the barn alone, but apparently there were no real takers at the time.
A 2016 satellite view showed the town with the structures that were there when it went up for sale.
There wasn't much to the town from the outside, but it still is an unincorporated township, and at one point, was much bigger. It was founded in 1931 and included a post office and a grocery store. The grocery store owner had the last name of Swett and thus, it was named.
Back then, it had 40 residents. Whether it's been sold or not, it certainly has fewer today.
But you could have been the lucky owner of the entire town if you'd wanted to!
Most of the structures are gone now. Today, the town is dominated by a Fireworks Superstore.
There's also a Farmer's Cooperative that still bears the name of Swett.
With all the ghost towns in South Dakota, putting up the entire town of Swett, South Dakota, for sale is not exactly unheard of. There was another town put up for sale and successfully sold in Pennington County.
This is definitely one of the more unusual stories to come out of South Dakota. I wonder what the laws are for running your own town with your own local government. There are some crazy laws for many things in South Dakota - you won't believe some of them! It's just this type of thing that makes you tickled to be from South Dakota - you can always tell folks about your SoDak roots, and all the bizarre things that happen here.
