Words. Those are those little things that are made by a million combinations of differing letters that people put meaning too. It also seems that the meaning of those words have changed from time to time and has left some people wondering what they mean at all anymore!
Just like South Carolina has there own slang so do other regions and states in America as well. There are words that they use that would leave us shaking our heads and we would have a proverbial question mark hanging in the air. Here are 15 words and phrases that we probably wouldn't understand if we heard them or at least we wouldn't understand them they way they would need to be understood. Scratching your head yet? Just wait!
1. Wicked- This word does not ONLY refer to the play or the book. It is also used to mean "Awesome", "Amazing", and just plain cool.
2. & 3. Pop & Tonic - Say WHAT?!? These words do not just describe sounds and a type of water. Others use these very words to describe Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and other soft drinks.
4. Ratchet - No, it doesn't mean Robo Frog speak or the tool in your toolbox. In some parts of America a "ratchet" is used to describe a woman of low standards.
5. Thirstbucket - Do you have any idea what this word means? Believe me, I wouldn't have known it either until researching. A "Thirstbucket" is used to describe someone who is overly desperate.
6. Gully - This is not a cute way of speaking about a seagull. Gully is used to describe someone who is gullible, overly authentic or genuine.
7. Whip - Can you guess? Nope. It's not Cool Whip! Whip is used to describe an expensive vehicle such as this Bugatti.
8. Bombie - Well, this is a word that you would use to describe a very attractive woman. As in, "Man, she is a bombie!"
9. Post Up - No, this does not mean to put a post in the ground nor does it have anything to do with mail, post-it notes, etc. "Post up" is used to to mean standing around.
10. Dub - Do you want one? Maybe? No. Well, you might if you know that a "dub" is a $20 bill. I'll take a stack of those.
11. Hyphy - This is the word that is used in other areas as "to go crazy or lose inhibition" .
12. Stunnas - I like this word. It is used when talking about big, bold, beautiful sunglasses. Look at those stunnas!
13. Make a pass - This is a phrase that does NOT mean that someone is flirting with you. It is used as "come on, stop by, and hang out for a bit".
14. Slug - Normally this picture would be EXACTLY what you would be talking about, but no. Being a slug or slugging is used to mean being someone who is hitching a LEGAL ride with someone and slugging means to catch a ride with strangers.
14. Mugup - Are you mugup? No? Yes? Don't know? Mugup is used to mean "full" . As in, "I'm mugup after all that food."
What do you think? Will you be incorporating any of these words into your regular vocabulary in the near future? I don't know about some of them, but there are a few that I like such as "Wicked" and "Stunnas". Are there any of them that you like? Do you have words or have you heard of words that we don't use here in South Carolina? If so, share them in the comments below. I would love to hear about them.
