America’s known for its many landmarks – from the Statue of Liberty in New York to the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. Perhaps none signifies freedom, however, as much as the Liberty Bell. This symbol of freedom draws countless visitors from all over the world to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. You don’t have to travel to Philadelphia, though, to get a glimpse of this landmark. You’ll find a replica Liberty Bell in Providence, Rhode Island.
Encased in glass, the Liberty Bell sits in front of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, a popular tourist attraction that was once used to summon townspeople to share news and to announce the start of political meetings.
The inscription on the Liberty Bell reads, "Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants thereof."
Perhaps best defined by its crack, the original Liberty Bell rang for the final time in 1846 as a way to honor George Washington’s birthday.
Philadelphia may have the original Liberty Bell, but each of the 48 states (at the time) was gifted a replica of this iconic American landmark in 1950.
That year, President Harry S. Truman commissioned the creation of replica Liberty Bells – one for each of the United States, its territories, and Washington D.C. – as a gift from the United States Treasury Department.
The replica Liberty Bell sits in the south vestibule of the Rhode Island State House. You can visit and snap photos, but you can’t ring the bell.
Guided tours of the Rhode Island State House are also available.
You can visit this unique piece of American and Rhode Island history for yourself!
