Just about everywhere we go in Pittsburgh, we can hear whispers of the city's past if we listen closely enough. Have you ever really thought about what life was like when horses pulled buggies through the streets of the city? Before color photos and color TVs? Long before our smartphones, Google, and the internet? Sit back and enjoy a rare glimpse into the past through some of these old photos of Pittsburgh.
1. Phipps Conservatory, shortly after construction was completed, is shown in this photograph from 1893.
These old Pittsburgh pictures illustrate just how much the city has changed.
2. The Fort Pitt Block House, built in 1764, played an important role in the French & Indian War before it was converted into a single-family home as seen in this 1893 photograph.
3. Several steamboats, including the Frank Gilmore and the Adam Jacobs, cruise down the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh in this photo from around 1892.

4. The Times Building still stands at 336 Fourth Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh. Built in 1892, the photo below was captured sometime during the 1890s.
5. Horses and buggies park outside of the B&O Railroad Depot in 1899.
6. Now one of Pittsburgh’s most popular spots, Highland Park (the entrance) is captured in this photograph from the turn of the 20th century.
7. Pittsburghers still pass Union Station, seen here circa 1901, today.
8. The Pittsburgh Pirates of 1901 to 1903 included such famous players as Honus Wagner, Fred Clarke, and Ed Phelps.
9. Notice the Monongahela Incline in the background of this photo of a wintery Smithfield Street in January 1903.

11. How many times have you passed the Bridge of Sighs, which connected the Allegheny County Courthouse with the jail, in Pittsburgh? Photo captured in 1902.
12. Once upon a time, Pittsburghers could visit Kennywood Park or Luna Park, seen here in 1905.
13. Alas, Luna Park stuck around for only a few short years, opening in 1905 and closing in 1909. Photo below is from 1905.
