What's the old saying? You can take a Pittsburgher out of Pittsburgh but you can't take Pittsburgh out of a Pittsburgher? Or, maybe it's easier to just say, once a Pittsburgher, always a Pittsburgher. Here are some of the things people miss about Pittsburgh when they leave.
1. Pittsburghese
Sure, you can still speak Pittsburghese when you leave the Burgh but, realistically,, how many people are going to understand you? It's just not the same as speaking Pittsburghese at home in the Burgh.
2. The Skyline
No matter from which direction you come into the city, you're treated to a spectacular view of the downtown Pittsburgh skyline. Seeing that skyline means knowing you're home.
3. The Rolling Hills
Rolling hills surround us, providing us with beautiful scenery just about anywhere we travel in the Pittsburgh area.
4. Four Seasons
You might have four seasons if you move somewhere outside of Pittsburgh, but will you experience them all in one day? Waking up and bundling up into winter clothes and throwing on shorts by mid-afternoon - it's a Burgh thing.
5. Charming Neighborhoods
Downtown Pittsburgh has plenty to offer but so do its charming neighborhoods. From taking leisurely strolls in Squirrel Hill or Shadyside to shopping and dining in the Strip District and the South Side, Pittsburghers are lucky to have such diversity at their fingertips.
6. The Culture
Leave Pittsburgh and you're sure to miss the rich culture it offers: World class museums, the opera, and the theater are all important parts of Pittsburgh's vibrant personality.
7. Sprawling Parks
It's nearly impossible to feel stir crazy in Pittsburgh, especially with all the sprawling parks - Frick Park, Highland Park, and Schenley Park, to name just a few - around the region that provide the perfect opportunity for hiking, walking, jogging, and engaging in outdoor activities.
8. The Restaurant Scene
In the mood for Thai? Chinese? Authentic Italian? Or, are you just looking for a delicious meal with the perfect view? Whatever you're craving, you'll find in Pittsburgh's eclectic restaurant scene.
9. Pierogies
You can probably find pierogies anywhere but nothing tastes as good as a pierogie made in Pittsburgh.
10. Chipped Chopped Ham
Where else can you satisfy that hankering for Isaly's chipped chopped ham except Pittsburgh?
11. The Steelers...
You can watch the Steelers anywhere in the world but you can only feel the electricity of Steeler Nation in Pittsburgh.
12. The Penguins and...
Same goes for the Pens and...
13. The Pirates
The Buccos.
14. Pittsburghers
But, most of all, leaving Pittsburgh means leaving the friendliness, the kindness, and the vibrant personalities of Pittsburghers behind.
Of course, Pittsburghers miss the Burgh when we leave. Pittsburgh does ruin us for life, after all. What do you miss about Pittsburgh when you leave - whether moving out of town or just going on vacation?
