How long have you called Pennsylvania home? Whether you’ve been here for a lifetime or just a short time, you’ve probably noticed that it’s easy to fall in love with this amazingly diverse and unique state. And if you’re from here – like I am – you’ve likely run into other Pennsylvanians wherever you go. Somehow we just gravitate toward each other, no matter where in the world we travel. Our roots in Pennsylvania run deep and, even if we don’t agree with each other on everything – or even anything – we all share some commonalities that make us proud to call PA Home. We can show off our pride, too, thanks to the Wear Our Roots brand. See if you agree with the 10 surefire signs you have strong roots in Pennsylvania.
1. It’s just PA.
It’s pretty easy to spot a native by how they refer to us – Pennsylvania or PA. Most of us simply call our beloved state PA.
2. We’ve got our own language.
Visitors might suffer from a bit of culture shock moving to PA. From yinz in Pittsburgh to youse in Philly, we have our own language, and it varies depending on where we live in the state. Do you call it pop or soda? What’s your corner of PA’s version of jagoff? (Yep, that’s a Burgh thing.)
3. We’re all about good food.
We eat pretty well in PA. That should come as no surprise, considering we live in a state that invented the Philly cheesesteak, the stromboli, and Hershey’s chocolate.
4. Sometimes it’s a bit odd…at least to others.
Some people may roll their eyes at the mere thought of fries on a sandwich or on fries, but really?
5. We pick sides – Philly or Pittsburgh?
Which side are you on? Eagles or Steelers? Phillies or Pirates? Flyers or Pens?
6. Wawa or Sheetz?
How are we to choose? They’re both so good.
7. We’ve all complained about the turnpike.
We’ve all driven on the turnpike at least once in our lives. We’ve inevitably complained – maybe every time we glide past the toll booth – about how expensive it is.
8. Any time’s a good time to wear shorts.
Who cares if it’s below zero with a foot of snow on the ground? We’re fine with wearing shorts any time of the year.
9. We know how to deal with whatever comes our way.
That’s mostly because of the weather. We’ve all dressed for winter in the morning then by early afternoon we’re ready to change into shorts and turn the air on.
10. There’s no place like home.
We can travel or we can move away, but one thing is for certain. As soon as we cross back over the Pennsylvania border, we know we’re home.
