So which areas in Pennsylvania draw in the least per capita income? We looked at the 2010 United States Census Data and the 2006-2010 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates to find out which are the ten poorest counties in the state of Pennsylvania.
10. Jefferson County
Per capita income: $20,305
Jefferson County is home to Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who predicts the oncoming spring each year.
9. Clarion County
Per capita income: $20,259
Clarion County is home to a number of notable people, including Jim Kelly, who played for the Buffalo Bills, Jane Wolfe, who was as silent film actress, and Chris Kirkpatrick, who was a member of N'SYNC (or is still a member? Is N'SYNC still a thing?)
8. Greene County
Per capita income: $20,258
Greene County has over 40 sites that are included on the National Register of Historic Places. This is definitely a destination to put on your list if you're interested in local history.
7. Clearfield County
Per capita income: $20,142
Clearfield County has two state parks: Parker Dam and S. B. Elliott.
6. Somerset County
Per capita income: $19,903
Somerset County is one of the snowiest places in the entire country, due to its high elevation and proximity to the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. It has recorded snow in every month except July, though rumor has it that in 1816, the county even saw snow in July.
5. Sullivan County
Per capita income: $19,718
Sullivan County is a destination for hikers due to its number of big mountains. In the picture above is Worlds End State Park.
4. Clinton County
Per capita Income: $19,261
Lock Haven University is located in Clinton County, which is one of the most popular college destinations for Pennsylvania residents.
3. Fayette County
Per capita income: $19,209
Fayette County is home to two national protected areas that are also cool places to visit: Fort Necessity National Battlefield and Friendship Hill National Historic Site.
2. Mifflin County
Per capita income: $19,085
Mifflin County is named after Tom Mifflin, who was the first governator of Pennsylvania.
1. Forest County
Per capita income $14, 325
Forest county has four locations on the National Register of Historic Places.
