When we think of Pennsylvania history, we probably think about the birthplace of America and Gettysburg, the site of arguably the bloodiest Civil War battle. However, so many other spots also boast fascinating histories. The longest tunnel in Pennsylvania, for example, dates back decades and only earned the title of the longest tunnel after another popular tunnel permanently closed.
It’s probably safe to say most Pennsylvanians have traveled on the Pennsylvania Turnpike at least a few times in their lives. Chances are you’ve even driven through the Allegheny Mountain Tunnel.
The tunnel clocks in at 1.15 miles and is the longest tunnel in Pennsylvania that’s currently in use. Before the Sideling Hill Tunnel closed in 1968, it held the record at 1.28 miles. Coming in a close second, at 1.1 miles, is the Tuscarora Mountain Tunnel.
Traveling through the Allegheny Mountains, the tunnel opened in 1939. Originally, the tunnel shuttled traffic both eastbound and westbound.
However, decades later in 1965, the original tunnel opened solely to westbound traffic while a new eastbound tunnel opened, allowing for a better flow of traffic.
Interestingly, the Allegheny Tunnels weren’t the original tunnel by that name. Construction began on the original tunnel, set to be used for trains, at the tail-end of the 19th century, but it was never finished.
Today, the Allegheny Tunnels are among the four original tunnels that remain on the PA Turnpike. The others include Tuscarora Mountain Tunnel, Blue Mountain Tunnel, and Kittatinny Mountain Tunnel.
The last time the current tunnels underwent renovations was the mid-1980s. A decade later, a PA Turnpike Commission inspection determined the tunnels needed another renovation. However, as of 2020, studies are still underway to determine how to best proceed with the needed renovations.
