Like this historic park in Pennsylvania that promises a glimpse into the past and a monument to one of America's Presidents. And, while you're at Buchanan's Birthplace State Park, sit down to a relaxing picnic or dangle your feet in the water as you fish for trout.
Tucked between Mercersburg and McConnellsburg, Buchanan's Birthplace State Park pays homage to James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States.
Spend a few minutes learning about President Buchanan, who was born in Cowan's Gap on April 23, 1791. And, he would later serve as President from 1857 to 1861.
Then, explore the cozy 18.5-acre Pennsylvania historic park that features a monument to Buchanan.
Walk around the gated pyramid, made from local stone, that bears the inscription, "The incorruptible statesman whose walk was upon the mountain ranges of the law."
The monument, inspired by Buchanan's niece Harriet Lane Johnston, was completed in late 1907. By 1911, Pennsylvania had established Buchanan's Birthplace State Park.
After visiting the monument, explore the rest of the park that features Buck Run, a popular spot for fishing for trout.
And, be sure to bring lunch, so you can have a picnic at the pavilion or at one of the tables scattered among the trees.
Of course, the Pennsylvania park also hosts guided walks and an assortment of activities annually from April through October.
