Allegheny County rests in the Southwest corner of Pennsylvania. It was once black from the steel mills, but is now black and gold country and is one of the most up and coming places to make your home. Don't believe me? Just take a look at what we have to offer.
1. Black and Gold Nation
Between the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins, the whole city bleeds black and gold. No cold weather, rain, or intense heat will keep the true die hard Pittsburgh fans from coming out and supporting the local favorites.
2. Construction Junction
Allegheny County is made up of city and suburbs, many communities being rehabbed into hip new places to live and raise families. The cost of living is much cheaper in the area than many other large cities, allowing folks to buy starter homes and really put some sweat and money into bringing what was once old, back to life. Construction Junction offers all materials that can be repurposed, from doors to toilets and everything in between. And, once a year they hold the Big Pour, a craft beer and pop exhibition that is one of the most sought after events in the area.
3. Cultural District
Right in the middle of the county in Downtown Pittsburgh is the Cultural District. With several different theaters offering shows, concerts, ballets and operas every night, there is no lack of enlightenment happening in the area.
4. Neighborhood Schools
Allegheny County has a wonderful education system, giving way to neighborhood schools in each of the districts. In addition to these public schools, the city is also home to PAIS, the area consortium of independent schools that offer a private, academically rigorous educational experience in a nurturing environment.
5. Pierogis
The area is in love with pierogis. These delicious potato and cheese dumplings seem to have hometown roots in the area and are a favorite at the area's wholesale Strip District. The pierogis even come to life at PNC Park as they race each game after the 5th inning. Pierogis, the food, and fun, are considered one of the greatest highlights.
6. Water Activities
Since the city center is actually The Point where the three rivers meet, Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio Rivers, all of Allegheny County is connected to one of the rivers. Marinas, kayak rentals water skiing and tubing are regular summer afternoon activities for the locals and visitors alike.
7. Museums
The area is full of museums that cover every topic from dinosaurs to art at the Carnegie's to a famous pop icon and his silver balloons at the Warhol back to a hands on Science Center where you can meet R2D2. The area offers museums dedicated just for kids and museums featuring African American heritage and arts. Visit a museum set in a mansion right above the Allegheny River to see musical instruments at the Bayernhof Music Museum or check out the interactive art at the Mattress Factory. No matter your interests, you will be sure to find something new and cool to see and explore.
8. Zambelli Fireworks
Once the warm weather kicks into Allegheny County, there is no shortage of fireworks going off at some location. Whether at a game or just celebrating the Fourth of July, or it seems like maybe just because, the area's sky is continually lit up in a rainbow of colors with fireworks. And, they are not just your ordinary displays. The area hosts Zambelli fireworks which are the best in the area. Timed and set to music and always a splendid oooh and ahhh experience, Zambelli's firework displays cannot be beat. Well, not until they set off their next set.
9. Craft Breweries
Allegheny County has been the home to Iron City and IC Light FOREVER. Now, the area has branched out and now is home to several different independent brewing companies. Featuring seasonal craft beers n trendy settings, these breweries can be found in all areas, especially in Lawrenceville. However, brewing is not just limited to just the adult beverage. Locally owned and brewed pops, yep, I said pops, such as Natrona Bottling Company, distributes various flavors of pop including Vanilla Creme Pop, Cherry Pop and my personal favorite, Jamaican Ginger Beer.
10. Furries On The Loose
Once a year, in the beginning of the summer, as you stroll among the old stone buildings of downtown Pittsburgh, do not be surprised if you see large stuffed animals walking around. Each year the area holds the Furry Convention, a gathering of folks who dress up and gather to discuss the idea of giving human characteristics to fictional non-human characters. Enough said.
11. Pittsburgh Left
If you move to the area you must learn a couple things about Allegheny County and Western PA. 1. Once considered to be one of the oldest areas in the nation, Allegheny County is now growing, but not old, in innovation. Not only are younger folks relocating to the area, but folks who once called the area home are coming back. And with their return, they are bringing new and innovative businesses, restaurants and life to the city. Restaurants like The Groove Cheesesteak Co. and Spork offer unique, trendy, mouth watering eats for all ages and preferences.
13. The Yinzer Chair
What is a yinzer chair? It is a chair, one owns and feels is similar to one's own vehicle. Said chair is left in said vehicle's spot once said vehicle is utilized in order to not lose a rockstar parking spot that has been hand shoveled out after a large snowfall. Respect the yinzer chair.
