When Germany invaded Poland in 1939, Oklahoma was still entangled in economic depression. During the next six years federal dollars poured into the state for several airfields, the training of pilots and aircrews, and major maintenance and supply centers. In Oklahoma, at least 32 POW camps for approximately twenty thousand Germans were established. Here are 10 rare photos taken during WWII in Oklahoma:
1. Graduates of the Contract Flight School at Cimarron Field, Oklahoma, 1944.
2. The 655th Bombardment Squadron during training at Will Rogers Field, Oklahoma, 1944.
3. Franklin D. Roosevelt and plant workers in Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1943.
4. These women were staying busy by taking an art class at the Federal Art Center at the Municipal Auditorium in Oklahoma City, 1941.
5. With their guns and auxiliary equipment slung on the backs of army mules, these trainees break through thick forests, ford streams, and scale mountain ranges at Fort Sill Field Artillery Replacement Training Center, Oklahoma, 1942.
6. This plane is a B-24E-1-DT built by Douglas aircraft at Tulsa, Oklahoma,1942-1943. The B-24E was only used for training.
7. Two members of the Marine Corps Women's Reserve in training at the Naval Air Technical Training Center, Norman, Oklahoma. They are unfolding the wing section to flight position during a day's work at the school, 1943.
