Oklahoma, buckle up for a nature-driven extravaganza! The cicadas are tuning up for a grand performance that hasn't graced our skies in more than 200 years. Gear up for the exceptional double emergence of Broods XIX and XIII this summer, setting the Sooner State abuzz in unprecedented fashion.
Cicada enthusiasts, mark your calendars for mid-May to late June of 2024. According to the experts at Cicada Mania, the periodical cicada brood known as Brood XIX is set to make its appearance across the southeastern United States.
This includes parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
The last time this extraordinary dual emergence occurred was way back in 1803 when Thomas Jefferson held the presidential reins, and Lewis and Clark embarked on their historic journey through the Louisiana Purchase. That's 221 years ago!
Now, in 2024, we are privileged to witness this entomological spectacle that only happens once in a lifetime.
Oklahoma, with its diverse cicada population, is no stranger to these winged wonders. The most common cicada in the state is the Dog-Day Cicada, renowned for its distinctive sounds that fill the night air.
These male cicadas utilize their specialized organs, called tympana, to produce a sound as loud as 108 decibels – equivalent to a car horn.
These cicadas pose no threat to flowers or vegetables. After a mesmerizing night of cicada concerts, these intriguing insects carry on their lifecycle, contributing to the cycle of nature and creating an unforgettable experience for Oklahomans.
Prepare for the buzzing crescendo, marvel at the historic dual emergence, and embrace the unique charm of Oklahoma's cicada symphony this summer. After all, it's a once-in-221-years event that you won't want to miss!
I'm curious to hear your opinions on the anticipated return of the Broods XIX and XIII to the Sooner State. Drop your thoughts in the comments section!
