If you've ever laid eyes on Key Tower, you've likely realized just how unique of a building it is. But you may not have realized that, along with being the tallest building in Ohio, it was once also the tallest between New York and Chicago. Today, it stands as the 39th tallest building in the country and continues to impress residents and visitors alike with its dazzling architecture and sweeping views of Cleveland. Anyone familiar with downtown Cleveland's skyline knows that Key Tower is an integral piece, and it has been since its completion in 1992.
Key Tower is 947 feet tall.
Despite its relatively recent history, this building holds the impressive title of being the tallest of its kind in Ohio. And, upon completion, it was also technically the tallest building between New York and Chicago.
Key Tower no longer holds this distinction, however, it still remains the tallest building in Ohio.
The landmark can be found on Public Square in Cleveland. It was designed by architect César Pelli in the Postmodern style.
When the Tower opened, it replaced Terminal Tower as the state's tallest building.
Interestingly, when the Terminal Tower was built in 1926, it was the second-tallest building in the world!
One of the iconic characteristics of Key Tower is the collection of bright red key logos located at the base of the tower's crown. Did you know that each of these keys weighs 1,500 pounds?
Today, Key Tower is home to 1.5 million square feet of office space. As you can imagine, the views from inside the building are positively spectacular.
So the next time you notice Key Tower, you can appreciate that it's a true marvel of engineering and a fascinating part of Ohio's history.
