Although time machines have yet to be invented, you can still get close to experiencing what it was like to live in another time period by visiting some of these awesome historical sites found all around North Dakota. If you're a history buff or just want to look into North Dakota heritage then you should definitely check out these 8 places.
1. Bonanzaville - West Fargo
Bonanzaville is definitely one of the most popular attractions in all of the state, and for a good reason. What's cool about it is that it holds so much history in every aspect of the town. It is like a lot of museums all in one blast-from-the-past place. There's a ton of stuff to see, experience, and learn!
2. Fort Union Trading Post - Williston
This trading post right on the Missouri river was originally built all the way back in 1828. It was highly important in the fur trade back at that time. Today, you can visit the fort and get a taste of what it would have been like to be there almost 200 years ago.
3. Knife River Indian Villages - Stanton
This cluster of preserved earth lodges, which were early shelters of the Northern Plains Indians, helps us get a glimpse of what their lifestyle could have been like in their almost 8,000 years of inhabiting that area. This will really throw you back in time and provide a fascinating look into the very earliest of North Dakota heritage.
4. Fort Totten State Historic Site - Fort Totten
Fort Totten was originally a military outpost back in the 1870s until it was transformed into a boarding school for the local native children. Now, the fort is full of buildings and artifacts from that time period that you can check out for yourself. You can certainly learn quite a bit here!
5. McKenzie County Heritage Park - Watford
This town really is just like stepping through a time machine. Old buildings such as a blacksmith and a barber fill the park, and there are even displays of objects like mammoth fossils to take you WAY back. Definitely worth a visit!
6. Prairie Village Museum - Rugby
There are more than 20 buildings in this village that will let you really experience what it was like to live in North Dakota back then. With extensive history and artifacts from both towns like this as well as the Native American tribes, you can really enjoy and discover the rich history this state has.
7. Bagg Bonanza Farm - Mooreton
This farm has a lot of history about one of the most influential things that helped build North Dakota to where it is today: the bonanza farm. It was one of many back then, but today it is the last standing. The farm itself has a lot of history that you can dive into when you are there, from how bonanza farms worked to what it was like to live on one, and why they sprung up and disappeared as they did. It's a very intriguing part of North Dakota history you should definitely see.
8. Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile Site - Cooperstown
Although this isn't going back in time quite as much as the others, it does touch on an important and little-known part of American history that North Dakota had a very big part in. The Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile Site offers a look back into what was going on with the government during the Cold War, and what it could have come to. If you enjoy learning about world history, then this is one of the places you MUST check out.
