North Dakota's oldest, still standing structure erected by then-exploring Euro-Americans is the Gingras Trading Post in Walhalla, built in 1843. But what if you could visit some place with history that goes further back than that, and has structures that stand on the site of a village from as early as the 1500s? Now that's old! The history spans much longer than that at this awesome place in the Peace Garden State that highlights an important part of its history. Take a look:
Travel back through history at one of North Dakota's most amazing state parks. It is here that you can explore history from the 1500s all the way to the early 1900s, and it's called Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park.
While the fort itself wasn't established until 1872, it's the On-A-Slant Mandan village within the park that is so old and fascinating.
This village likely began in 1575, surpassing the entire country's founding by about 200 years, and North Dakota's statehood by over 300. Today, reconstructed earth lodges that replicate the originals are open for exploration, inside and out.
Along with the On-A-Slant village, there are even more historic sites to check out at the park. The Fort Abraham Lincoln is quite the sight and there is a lot to see!
The fort today includes the Custer House, the home of Lieutenant Colonel George Custer of the "Custer's Last Stand" fame, and many reconstructed military buildings.
Throughout the year you can take tours at the park and even see some amazing reenactments.
The park is located in a naturally beautiful area along the Missouri and Heart Rivers, has tons of campsites, trails, and ways to experience North Dakota's natural history. It's truly a must-see destination in the state.
Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park is located at 4480 Fort Lincoln Road, Mandan, North Dakota 58554. Click here for more information about the park.
This state park is also home to another fun historic find, North Dakota's last and only trolley ride!
