Nestled right on Main Avenue in downtown Bismarck, North Dakota is the Camp Hancock State Historic Site.
This fascinating spot was built upon the original location of Camp Greeley, later renamed to Camp Hancock, which was established in 1872 and has stood in this location since.
The site includes the oldest building in Bismarck, the original headquarters building built when the camp was established, and an interpretive museum full of artifacts from throughout history.
There is quite a bit to see and admission is entirely free, so you'll definitely want to take advantage of it being the perfect no-cost afternoon trip destination.
You can explore a large amount of the local Bismarck history here from decades before North Dakota even became a state. From being a work camp to being the site of a U.S. Weather Bureau office, it certainly holds an interesting past.

Camp Hancock is located at 101 E Main Ave., Bismarck, ND 58501. It is open on weekends from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and other times by appointment.
