To identify the deadliest roads leading to terrifying drives in North Carolina, MoneyGeek conducted a study of fatal crashes in the state between 2018 and 2020. Researchers analyzed 4,017 crashes that resulted in death to identify the stretches of road and the factors contributing to the wrecks. Here are some of the findings and a few of the 10 Deadliest Road Stretches in North Carolina identified as a result of the analysis. The most common factors were speeding (25.4%), drunk driving (23.4%), and distracted driving (7.1%).
1. Cliffdale Road from Beverly Drive to Lansdowne Road in Fayetteville (4.9 miles)
The report shows this as North Carolina's deadliest stretch of road with 10 fatal accidents and 11 fatalities.
2. The Plaza from Ilford Street to East 36th Street in Charlotte (2.3 miles)
The fifth in the list of 10 shows six fatal accidents with six fatalities here.
3. N.C. State Route 55 from Pineview Cemetery Road to Indian Springs Road in Wayne County (3.7 miles)
A total of five fatal accidents with nine fatalities were reported along this route.
4. Eastway Drive from Hilliard Drive to Central Avenue in
Charlotte (1.3 miles)
Here five fatal accidents and six fatalities were reported.
5. The entire Dragon
boasts 318 curves in 11 miles
This road wasn't in the top 10 list, but according to the Blount County Sheriff's Office, in 10 years there were 27 motorcycle fatalities on the 11 miles, due, in part, to the department's traffic enforcement efforts.
While this may seem like a low number, remember this is only 11 miles with a speed limit of 30 mph.
The nearest ambulance service is 45 minutes away, so please be careful out there and enjoy the ride.
