For the official state news anchor/reporter in North Carolina, we nominate Renee Chou of WRAL in Raleigh! Not that OnlyInYourState is on the committee to make this important decision, but Chou's determination to become one of the best anchors/reporters in the country has come to our attention. Beginning as a reporter for the morning news in 2004 working the midnight shift, she worked her way up to the weekend morning and weekend evening anchor positions. In 2014 she was named the weekday morning anchor and added the noon news in 2016. Before moving to The Tar Heel State, Chou was an anchor/reporter for KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and KOMU-TV in Columbia, Missouri.
She is known to get out in the community.
Chou read to students at Benson Elementary School in May of 2012.
She reported onsite before Hurricane Earl hit the Outer Banks in Sept. 2010.
A couple of years later, her coverage of Hurricane Sandy along the Outer Banks in late October 2012 won a Regional Emmy for Weekend Newscast and “Best Weather Reporting” from the NC Associated Press Broadcast Awards.
Due to her dedication at WRAL she has earned a few more Regional Emmys, including one for General Assignment in 2015.
Chou reaches out to her fans during hometown events.
In October 2022 she signed autographs with her colleague Nia Harden at the North Carolina State Fair.
She said one of her personal goals is to become a regular blood donor.
This blood drive in November 2023 was her fifth time for the year. "I feel incredibly blessed to be healthy enough to give. I know it’s not for everyone, but if you can, consider giving the gift that will help save a life this holiday season," she said on the WRAL Renee Chou Facebook page.
Some of her coworkers showed their support by wearing red to bring attention to Cardiovascular disease, the No. 1 killer of women.
Part of Team WRAL from left includes Brian Shrader, Michelle Mackonochie, Elizabeth Gardner, Chou, Ken Smith, and Jeff Hogan.
Celebrating the sunrises each morning with Chou has become a tradition in many households.
