If you've been looking for (or grasping for) a distraction from the bizarre turn of events this spring that have lead to much of the state remaining behind the closed doors of our own homes for hours and even days on end, then look no further than your own computer or television. We've put together the ultimate list of movies filmed in North Carolina that are a must for movie lovers in the Tar Heel State. Consider this your quarantine movie bucket list and enjoy!
1. The Green Mile
While much of "The Green Mile" was filmed at a famous (and recently destroyed by tornado) former prison in Tennessee, the Flat Top Manor (a.k.a. Moses Cone Manor) in Blowing Rock was the setting for the retirement home where the film's storyteller lived.
2. We're The Millers
The hilarious 2013 comedy, "We're The Millers" may have taken the faux Miller family across the Mexican border, but the truth is, the filming was based in Wilmington and featured various locations along the coast of North Carolina.
3. Talladega Nights
Surprisingly, only a few scenes were filmed at the actual Talladega Speedway. Most of this iconic film was shot in Concord, Lake Norman, and various one-off locations around Charlotte.
4. Dirty Dancing
Few movies have defined a generation in quite the same way as "Dirty Dancing," which was filmed primarily at various locations at North Carolina's Lake Lure.
5. The Hunger Games
North Carolina's Henry River Mill Village gave District 12 its desolate look and various other spots from Charlotte to Black Mountain and Asheville also provided locations for "The Hunger Games."
6. The Last of the Mohicans
The movie was filmed in various North Carolina locations, including Chimney Rock (and Chimney Rock State Park) where the 404-foot Hickory Nut Falls was used as a stunning backdrop.
7. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
This 2017 film swept through the awards season with more than 30 awards including Best Actress for Francis McDormand's portrayal of a mother looking for justice for her murdered daughter. Based on a true story, the film was set in Ebbing, Missouri - but filmed in and around Sylva, North Carolina.
8. The Color Purple
Filmed near Monroe, North Carolina, this 1985 film taught us all about finding inner strength and how important it is to maintain hope in the toughest of situations.
9. Iron Man 3
The third movie in the series was filmed in Wilmington with some scenes captured on Oak Island. Tony Stark's clash with The Mandarin is one for the ages.
Some of these, like "Dirty Dancing," and "Last of the Mohicans" are obvious, except maybe to new residents of the Tar Heel State. But were you surprised to hear about other movies on this list being filmed right here in North Carolina? Feel free to join the discussion and make suggestions of your other favorite, must-see movies filmed in North Carolina!
