When you're reaching for inspiration, visit the enchanting and historic community in North Carolina of Mocksville. With two historic districts, you can imagine what excitement the town's walking tour brings. Incorporated in 1839, and now with about 5,900 residents, Mocksville is the county seat and Davie County’s largest town, proving once again how greatness can come so small. Let's take a closer look at the charm of this extraordinary place.
When you first arrive, this view of North Main Street Historic District tells you this is a lovely town with quaint shops and classic architecture.
It is so significant, the district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
And the Salisbury Street Historic District was also added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Can you believe there are two?
It includes the Mocksville Academy pictured here in 1885, which still stands at 537 Salisbury St.
Joppa Presbyterian Church was organized in 1767 and started in the southeast section of the graveyard.
When the church moved to the town in 1834, preservation of the cemetery fell under Joppa Cemetery Inc. in 1951. Pictured is a circa 1908 photo.
Today, Joppa Cemetery is one of the oldest and most historic graveyards in the county.
It still features the graves of Daniel Boone's parents, Squire and Sarah Boone, and Daniel’s Brother, Israel Boone.
And back downtown you can't miss the stately Davie County Courthouse.
This gorgeous neo-classical revival-style structure was built in 1909.
History is so important here it accommodates hundreds of folks at the Davie County Public Library's Martin/Wall History room each year to trace their genealogies.
This special room holds many important reference materials and a knowledgeable staff of historians, such as Marcia. Get more details on Davie County Public Library’s Facebook page.
Another way to get acquainted with the historic scene is by perusing some of the antique stores.
The Vintage Sunflower Antiques and Collectables is one you can't miss, with antiques, vintage, and repurposed items to make your lives more beautiful.
We love the ambiance of this well-aged building with excellent bones, including the original 22-foot tin ceiling, hardwood floors, and brick walls.
The staff of Restaurant 101 offers burgers, steaks, and salmon daily. Discover more on Make Restaurant 101's website.
A hefty grilled bone-in pork chop is also on the menu.
This one is chili-rubbed with yummy corn and black bean salsa served over rice.
