If you happen to be new to the New York area, you'll quickly find that we have a lingo of our own just like very state across our country does. A unique dialect that's often a major tell tale sign about where we're from, there's certain words that only New Yorkers will be able to understand and explain. If you're looking to fit in with our longtime residents, try adding some of these phrases to your everyday conversations!
1. The Notch
A scenic route in the Catskills that you'll find most of our residents taking in an effort to avoid traffic along our busier highways. Bringing you through the mountains, this is what we're referencing when you hear us say "The Notch".
2. Garbage Plate
If you happen to hear a New Yorkers say that they're hungry for a Garbage Plate, no need to worry! We assure you, as obvious as it may seem, they're not actually longing for a literal plate of garbage. A scrumptious dish that's native to the Rochester area, this is one unusual phrase you won't mind hearing once you try a plate for yourself.
3. SPAC
Pronounced like how you would rhyme it with the word "back", SPAC stands for Saratoga Performing Arts Center. During the summer this outdoor venue is a popular place to visit, so you can frequently hear people mentioning that they'll be heading up to SPAC for a concert.
4. Enchanted Mountains
People may be familiar with the Adirondack Mountains and our Catskill Mountains, but do you know what our Enchanted Mountains are? Not to be confused with our Enchanted Forest Water Safari (if you just read that phrase without singing "where the fun never stops" pat yourself on the back ten times), New York's Enchanted Mountains references the area of Cattaraugus County.
5. The Crick
Depending on where you live, you may or may not hear some of us calling creeks "the crick".
6. Carousel
When you hear someone reference "Carousel", you probably are thinking of a merry-go-round. But if you hear someone specifically from the Syracuse region say they're going to Carousel, we're talking about what is now called Destiny USA. The popular mall to visit was long known as the Carousel Center, but even since the mall's name has changed over you'll still hear us calling it Carousel.
7. The Boob
Don't let your corrupt mines wander too far! Up north in the Adirondacks you'll hear us talking about The Boob, but not in the way that you're most likely thinking. The Boob is a popular cliff jumping spot up near Long Lake that's a rock that's been given a entertaining name.
8. Stewart's verse Cumby's
No we're not talking about people or anything else that you would imagine would go by this name, we're talking about making a stop at some of our favorite convenience stores!
9. SUNY
Pronounced like "soonie", you'll probably hear locals talking to each other about what SUNY school's they went to and graduated from.
