While New Mexicans are a diverse bunch, most of us share things like an appreciation for our intensely blue skies, a sense of awe at expansive landscapes, and a few characteristics that are reflected in the contents of our homes. Here are the 10 things you’re likely to find in every home in the state:
1. Chile
Chile is ubiquitous in New Mexico and it's in virtually every kitchen. Some people devote significant freezer real estate to their stash.
2. Tortillas
Fresh tortillas belong on every grocery list! Bonus points if you make them yourself.
3. Dust
This isn’t a comment on New Mexicans’ dedication to house cleaning, just a fact of life. It doesn’t seem to matter how often you wipe down a surface, a layer of dust is sure to settle on it as soon as you're "finished" - especially in spring.
4. Tile
While Saltillo tile is prevalent in New Mexico, all tile seems to be popular here. You're definitely more likely to encounter tile than hardwood flooring in our homes.
5. Sunscreen
The sun here can be pretty intense, so it's a good idea to slather on the sunscreen.
6. Sunglasses
While annual days of sunlight vary throughout the Land of Enchantment, we are blessed with plenty of sunny days. Even when it snows, you still need sunglasses to counter the glare.
7. Handmade crafts
From woven items to pottery, hand-crafted pieces of art decorate our living spaces.
8. Hiking boots
We live in one of the most beautiful states in the nation, so of course we want to get out there and explore it.
9. A physical map
Nowadays, most people rely on digital maps. However, there are enough stretches of New Mexico where you can't get cell service, that we tend to keep a physical map on hand as well.
10. Pets
While definitely not a "thing," according to a survey conducted by the American Veterinary Medical Association, you'll find pets in more than two out of three New Mexican homes. In terms of pet ownership rates, we're currently second in the nation, behind Vermont.
