We know most people are proud of where they're from or feel like their home is special or unique. But in New Jersey's case, it's true! New Jersey may be one of the smaller states, but don't be fooled - there are a lot of traditions, legends, and habits people who live in New Jersey soak up. You can always, always tell when someone is from New Jersey - even when they leave. You can travel somewhere else or even move to another state, but someone from New Jersey will never unlearn these undeniable habits.
Here is what we are talking about!
1. Asking "What exit?" instead of "What town do you live in?"
New Jerseyans know that a highway exit is much more illuminating info than a town name.
2. Shaming tourists.
Residents take great pride in not being a total "benny" — aka a tourist from out of state acting obnoxious on THEIR beaches.
3. They mean Springsteen when they refer to the "Boss," not their employer.
Bruce Springsteen is to be revered above all else.
4. Sprinkling every conversation with curse words.
5. Being afraid of the Jersey Devil.
A strange sound outside? A creature darting from the corner of your eye? Must be the Jersey Devil.
6. Searching out a pork roll for every breakfast.
A pork roll (or Taylor ham sandwich) is just necessary to start the day.
7. Defending Jersey at all costs.
New Jerseyans can rag on New Jersey all they want but the moment anyone else does, it's over for them.
Basically, a New Jerseyan is Jersey until they die! No matter where they go or end up, these specific Jersey habits are engrained in them.
