It's safe to say that most New Hampshirites have not heard of Weeks State Park — and that's a real shame. Way up north in Lancaster, this state park is built upon the 1912 estate of John Wingate Weeks, a leading conservationist, US Senator, and the Secretary of War for Presidents Harding and Coolidge. The forests and fields of the park are spectacular, and it's a wonderful place to hike, but the real treasure hiding here is the old mansion itself.
You can see why a powerful and wealthy man would want to build an escape from the rigors of his life here, with spectacular scenes of the Presidential Range and the White Mountains stretching far into the distance.
It's hard to describe the estate — even experts are stumped when they try since it doesn't really fit into any one architectural style.
You can explore inside the mansion, too — you'll adore the old hunting lodge-style decor with its fieldstone and stucco touches.
Visit on a sunny day and you'll be able to see for miles and miles.
For even better views, you can climb up the park's stone fire tower. You'll feel like you're in a fairy tale!
The scenery is especially stunning in the fall, of course, but it's truly magnificent all year round.
Weeks State Park is located on Route 3 in Lancaster, and it opens for the season with limited hours in mid-May — check the New Hampshire State Parks site for details.
