The state of Nevada is known for many things such as its amazing food, its historical role in the mining industry, and (of course) its numerous gambling casinos. 1. In 1859, the first major discovery of silver ore in the U.S. (Comstock Lode) occurred in Nevada.
2. The first and only motel completely decorated in a clown theme is the Clown Motel, which is located in Tonopah, Nevada.
3. Nevada produced the first blue jeans. Jacob Davis, Reno-based Latvian tailor, teamed up with Levi Strauss and together they invented the first pair of blue jeans.
4. The first round courthouse built in the U.S. was the Pershing County Courthouse, which is located in Lovelock, Nevada. This unique courthouse was built in 1920-21.
5. The nation's first off-airport airline baggage check-in service opened in Las Vegas at the Imperial Palace, which has since been renamed The LINQ Hotel & Casino.
6. On March 1, 1869, Nevada was the first state to ratify the 15th Amendment, which gave voting rights to African-American men.
7. On November 4, 1870, Nevada produced "The Great Train Robbery" - the American West's first train robbery.
8. Nevada was the first and only state to discover a complete skeleton of an ichthyosaur - an extinct marine reptile.
9. In 1933, Nevada produced the first hardhats. They were invented specifically for the Hoover Dam workers.
10. The first case in the U.S. for fingerprint conviction occurred in Nevada. Ben Kuhl, the culprit behind the 1916 Jarbidge Stage Robbery, was the first murderer in American history convicted because of fingerprints.
