If you’ve ever gotten behind the wheel in Omaha, you’ve probably noticed them: those famous Omaha drivers. They tend to be a little aggressive, a little territorial, and sometimes maybe a bit distracted. And that’s not just our opinion – auto insurance platform QuoteWizard analyzed drivers in America’s 70 largest cities and found that Omaha drivers are the worst in the nation. Wait, let's throw that in reverse. That was last year - only one year later and Omaha, Nebraska has moved to position 25 on the bad driver's list. Way to go Omaha! Well, kind of - there are still plenty of people in the Nebraska worst drivers club.
Nebraska's largest city, with a population of more than 487,000 and a metro area of more than a million, has enjoyed steady growth for decades. And as the population has grown, so has the number of drivers on the streets.
QuoteWizard looked at four factors to determine which cities have the best and worst drivers: accidents, speeding tickets, DUIs, and citations (such as failing to stop for a red light).
For Omaha, the largest negative factor was still the number of DUIs. Omaha ranked in the 14th position. The previous year Omaha had the most DUIs of any of the 70 cities evaluated in this study. While still an issue, that's quite an improvement.
Despite the improvement, DUIs have, alarmingly, been occurring more frequently during daylight hours. A 2021 interview between a Douglas County deputy and a local news station also revealed that the blood alcohol content of those arrested for drunk driving has been on the rise in recent years.
Citations were the biggest area of improvement for Omaha. It came in at #7 on the list of 70 cities in 2021. In 2022 that position moved to number 44.
"The Big O" was #21 on the list when it came to the number of accidents and #37 for speeding. We definitely would have expected it to rank higher for speeding!
While Omaha has made major improvements in its driving records over the last year, perhaps we can shoot for the top 25 for BEST driving cities next year.
Unless you are part of the Omaha worst drivers club you might have a different opinion of drivers in Omaha. Are drivers in Omaha pretty bad, or do you agree with QuoteWizard’s new assessment? What city do you think has the worst drivers? Add your opinions in the comments!
