Nebraska is a special place with its own culture, its own personality, and its own rules. Whether you're originally from here or Nebraska is your adopted home, you probably know that these are the rules we all follow, no matter what.
1. Respect your family.
This is drilled into most of us from birth. Family is the most important thing there is, and these are the only people who will be there for you no matter what.
2. Be prepared for every eventuality.
Most of us have first aid kits, emergency tornado kits, jumper cables, roadside emergency kits, and other gear hanging around to help out when something goes wrong. We're like a whole state full of Boy Scouts.
3. Be prepared to see this (and display it) everywhere possible.
If it can be decorated with a Huskers logo, it will be decorated with a Huskers logo. From clothing to jewelry to mousepads to popcorn and almost everything else you can think of.
4. Mind your manners.
Say "please" and "thank you," hold open the door for the person behind you, and help out when someone needs help. Not everyone remembers this rule all the time, but for the most part we're polite folks.
5. Always watch out for the deer.
When you're driving, always scan the sides of the road for that telltale eye sparkle or tail twitch. They love to jump out in front of cars, and running into them is awful for everyone.
6. Don't let the snow hold you back.
We're experts at driving in the snow, and we even love to go out and play in it. If we holed up inside every time we got a few inches of snow, we'd spend some months constantly indoors.
7. Don't freak out about tornado watches.
Ok, if you see something like that picture headed toward you, get into the basement or cellar. But a "watch" is just a heads-up - you don't need to start worrying until it turns into a "warning."
8. Bug spray is not optional.
If you forget the bug spray in the summer, you WILL come home covered in bites. Take it from someone who constantly forgets the bug spray: this is a rule to live by.
9. Neither is sunscreen.
Again, this is a summertime essential. Out here on the plains where you won't find a whole lot of natural shade, you need to protect your skin.
10. Never, ever trust the weather forecast.
Those "light showers" can turn into flash floods in the blink of an eye. Likewise, that epic snowstorm in the forecast can be a light dusting that's over in a matter of minutes.
11. Enjoy the simple things.
Respect the land, love the countryside, and remember how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place.
12. Always be proud of your home state.
We'll always be proud to be Nebraskans, and we'll defend our home no matter what.
