In Nebraska, our collective state identity is pretty distinctive. We're known as good-hearted, down to earth people who know how to treat others and take care of ourselves. We're all individuals, but growing up in Nebraska has cultivated some similarities between all (or at least most) of us. These are 12 of the best things about living in Nebraska, and they are just some of the benefits just about every Nebraskan enjoys.
1. Nature.
Is there anyone in Nebraska who doesn't appreciate all of the natural beauty around us? We live in a pretty amazing place.
2. Being on or in the water.
Tubing, swimming, boating...anything involving a lake or river is bliss to a Nebraskan.
3. Some kind of sport.
It could be (and probably is) the Huskers, but plenty of us prefer watching high school sports or other Nebraska college teams.
4. Long drives in the country.
There aren't many experiences more relaxing than a leisurely drive on winding country roads, taking in the Nebraska scenery.
5. Experiencing all of the seasons.
We may not love the blistering heat or painful cold at the time it's happening, but we do enjoy the variety. Who wants a consistent, predictable temperature all year round?
6. Home cooking.
Mom's recipes in the recipe box? Crock pot always at the ready? Check and check.
7. Home-grown veggies.
Even if you don't have your own garden, you're probably never without a kitchen full of fresh tomatoes and zucchini in the summer thanks to friends, family, and farmer's markets.
8. Community.
We're a state full of community-minded folks. If there's something we can do to help our neighbors, we'll be there in a flash.
9. Family.
Likewise with family. These are the most important people in our lives, no matter what.
10. Local, county, and state fairs and festivals.
We're happy with any reason to get out and party, really. It's infinitely better when we can party with the whole community!
11. Seeing another Nebraskan make it big.
We're all proud to see our state represented on a national or international level. When a hometown sweetheart like Emily Kinney (above) becomes famous, we're all proud to say they hail from our fair state.
12. Showing the rest of the country we're more than cattle and cornfields.
We don't really take kindly to the stereotypes, but we're friendly enough that we'll take time to tell people how diverse and fun Nebraska really is.
