Statistically, Montana is a very safe place to call home. While the Treasure State has seen an increase in both property crime and violent crime rates in recent years, those rates are still quite low overall. In fact, less than 1/3 of Montanans report feeling worried about their safety, which is fantastic.
Recently, Safewise compiled property crime and violent crime data on all of Montana's cities and towns to determine the safest places to live. According to all that research, these are the safest cities to live in in the Last Best Place in 2021.
10. Kalispell
Kalispell has a population of 24,473. Its property crime rate is 33.5 incidents per 1,000 residents, and its violent crime rate is 4.2, which earned it a spot on the safest cities list.
9. Hamilton
Hamilton is a pretty quiet place to call home, and that's just the way the locals like it. And with a violent crime rate of just 3.7 per 1,000 people, it's definitely a safe place to call home.
8. Laurel
Laurel is a small town of 6,768 people. While its property crime rate is currently 26.2 incidents per 1,000 residents, its low violent crime rate (4.1) earns it a spot on this list.
7. Miles City
Miles City can get a little rowdy, but it has a very low violent crime rate of 2.6 incidents per 1,000 people, so it seems as if it's all in good fun.
6. Belgrade
Bozeman's neighbor has a property crime rate of 19 incidents per 1,000 people and a violent crime rate of 3.8. This pretty little city is pretty darn safe.
5. Sidney
Sidney increased in size in recent years, although its population is still just 6,376. It's low in both violent crime and property crime, making it the 5th safest city in Montana in 2021.
4. Glasgow
Glasgow is hours away from any major city, making it Montana's most isolated town. It seems that those who prefer to live away from the crowds tend to leave each other alone as well -- the property crime rate is just 10.5 per 1,000 residents, and the violent crime rate is a mere 4.2.
3. Columbia Falls
Columbia Falls has always been pretty peaceful. It currently boasts one of the lowest crime rates in Montana, with just 1.9 incidents per 1,000 people.
2. Dillon
It's hard not to fall in love with Dillon as soon as you visit, and with shockingly low rates of both property crime and violent crime (3.0 and 1.9, respectively), it's safe to assume living here is as pleasant as it seems.
1. Glendive
Glendive has both the lowest property crime and violent crime rates in the entire state. Only about 5,000 Montanans call this small town home, and it seems to be a strong community.
