You’re a lucky person indeed if you live in Montana. Statistically our state is one of the safest by far, and you’re highly unlikely to be the victim of a crime here. That being said, we are not exempt from things like theft or even violent crime. Take this however you’d like, but based solely on FBI statistics and not opinion, these places have the highest rates of violent crime.
1. Ronan
The bad news: Ronan is ranked number one in the state for violent crime. The good news: At 1 in 28, your odds of being a crime victim still aren’t very high. Your odds in some of our major cities would be much higher.
2. Wolf Point
Wolf Point comes in second for violent crime, but it’s not even a close second to Ronan… your odds of being a victim are 1 in 173. Also, property crime rates have dropped tremendously in recent years.
3. Hamilton
Hamilton comes in third for violent crime rates, but crime in general in this beautiful city has decreased lately.
4. Havre
You’ve got a 5% chance of being a violent crime victim if you live in Havre, putting it fourth on our list. There was a large drop in violent crime rates from 2011-2013, though, and the latest data isn’t available from the FBI yet.
5. Missoula
As one of our largest cities, it should come as no surprise that Missoula is on our list. Unfortunately violent crime rates rose slightly from 2011-2013.
6. Polson
Polson has more property crime than anything else… waterfront communities tend to have that issue, unfortunately. But they do see their share of violent crime there, especially when tourists crowd the area.
7. Helena
If you’re living in our state’s capital city, you’ve got a 1 in 263 chance of being the victim of a violent crime. Property crime is much more rampant here than violence.
8. Billings
Billings is our most populated city, and more people tends to mean more crime. But violent crime rates are much lower than property crime rates, which are the second highest in the state.
Again, Montana is statistically a very safe place to be. But crime can happen anywhere at any time, so no matter where you live or where you visit, it’s best to take precautions to stay as safe as possible. We still hold the opinion that Montana is the best state.
