Montana is known for some seriously iconic foods, from Flathead cherries to tasty bison burgers and the famous huckleberry bear claws at the Polebridge Mercantile. But if you happen to be from Butte, you know there isn't anything better than a classic pork chop sandwich.
This legendary meal was invented almost a century ago, right here in Montana. And even all these years later, it's still a local favorite. In fact, some might say it's more popular than ever before.
It all started in 1924 when a man named John Burklund invented the pork chop sandwich in Butte.
Burkland started selling the sandwiches to hungry miners and locals out of the back of a wagon (you could say he also invented the food truck long before its time).
The pork chop sandwich was such a unique invention that demand continued to grow.
In 1932, Burklund opened his first Pork Chop John's location at 8 W. Mercury St. Currently, there are two locations in Butte.
The pork chop sandwich is still as popular as ever, and it's easy to see why.
This is a true culinary masterpiece (and totally unique).
You can order a single sandwich or a double, depending on how hungry you are.
Order it loaded with mustard, pickles, and onions, add tomato and mayo, or customize it to your liking.
Pork Chop John's also has plenty of other tasty menu items, like cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and pork nuggets.
However, the pork chop sandwich is the most popular menu item, by far.
This place even has swag.
When you've been around for almost a century, you develop a cult following.
Pork Chop John's is still going strong in Butte.
If you've never tried this Montana delicacy, consider this your friendly nudge to go.
