People from Missouri have their quirks, that's for sure. But they wouldn't be true Missourians if they didn't do these somewhat unusual things. Which ones are you guilty of?
1. Eat their barbecue burnt.
Burnt ends. It may sound like a mistake made in the kitchen, but we guarantee you it's not. All the deliciousness of a slab of ribs, without the work of having to remove the bone. It's pretty genius actually, and Kansas City serves them the best. It's just a part of living in Missouri.
2. Yell the loudest at an NFL game.
In 2014, football fans at Arrowhead Stadium broke the Guinness World Record for loudest noise level hitting 142.2 decibels. Oakland Raiders fans, let's see if you can top that.
3. Toast their pasta.
Pasta's great and all, but I'd like to give a personal thank you to St. Louis for perfecting the art of toasted ravioli. Its crispy exterior and gooey, savory interior definitely make this delicacy a game-changer.
4. Drink and float.
Drinking while driving a motorboat is completely unsafe and definitely not recommended. However, floating on a kayak or canoe with a cooler of beer in the back is totally acceptable. In fact, float trips are basically a rite of passage for Missourians.
5. Pronounce their home state two different ways.
Is it Missour-uh or Missour-ee? You should be good with either one, but most often you will hear the latter.
6. Spelunk for fun.
Before I moved to the Show-Me state, I had no idea what this funny word meant. Spelunking is a favorite pastime of Missourians that involves exploring the inside of various caves throughout the state.
7. Refer to the southeasternmost part of the state as the boot heel.
Before looking at a map, you may be confused as to why the Missouri counties of Dunklin, New Madrid, and Pemiscot are referred to as the "bootheel". But once you take a look you'll notice how this part of the state extends south of 36°30’ north longitude, giving it its shape.
8. Dress their dogs in costumes.
In 2012, 1,326 dogs assembled in costume for the St. Louis Pet Parade. That impressive number still holds the Guinness World Record today.
9. Warsh (not wash) their clothes.
After a session at the gym, you're going to want to warsh your clothes. Yeah, you heard me. Warsh. I'm not saying it wrong, you non-Missourians are.
10. Top their pizzas with a tri-blend of processed cheese.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. We heard you Chicago and New York. Apparently, you guys have the best pizza. But what you don't have is the glory of provel cheese from St. Louis. Swiss, provolone, and cheddar are all processed into one cheese block to be shredded and topped onto a fresh pizza pie. And it's absolutely delicious and one of those things only people from MIssouri do.
