While we can find some downright delicious barbecue in plenty of places in the United States, we don’t have to travel far for a taste of some of the best. No matter where you go in the city or Missouri, for that matter, you can find some of that famous barbecue. Today, Kansas City is home to more than 100 barbecue restaurants, illustrating why, in part, it’s the BBQ Capital of the World.
A trip to Kansas City inevitably means a stop at one of its famous barbecue joints – Arthur Bryant’s Barbecue, Gates BBQ, or Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Q, are just a few of them – to sample the food for which it is perhaps best known.
From food trucks to restaurants, Kansas City makes satisfying that barbecue craving easy.
The rich history of BBQ in Kansas City goes back more than a century, and it’s all thanks to one man – Henry Perry.
Back in the 1920s, Perry began selling his barbecue in different areas of Kansas City. His method of making barbecue was simple. He used hickory or oak wood and slow-cooked the meat.
Soon, Perry earned his rightful title of “The Father of Kansas City Barbecue,” and he eventually transitioned from selling his famous BBQ outdoors to a brick-and-mortar location.
But his impact went far beyond feeding Missourians. He also influenced a generation of new cooks, including the Bryants. Charlie Bryant took over Perry’s BBQ joint upon his death. Charlie’s brother, Arthur, eventually bought the restaurant, turning it into Arthur Bryant’s Barbecue.
By inventing burnt ends, Arthur Bryant’s Barbecue also helped solidify Kansas City’s place as the BBQ Capital of the World. It’s still a must-visit for any barbecue fan who is spending time in Kansas City.
