Historic places are usually associated with the paranormal. It should come as little surprise, then, that haunted tales run rampant at this historic Missouri battlefield. The battlefield draws ghost hunters and those hoping to catch a glimpse of something otherworldly. Even if you’re not a true believer in the paranormal, this haunted battlefield in Missouri is still worth a visit for its rich history.
Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield in Republic played a significant role in the Civil War as the site of the war’s second major battle and the first west of the Mississippi.
The Union Army attacked the Confederate Army on August 10, 1861, resulting in their loss and the death of their leader, Nathaniel Lyon. His death would mark the first of a Union General during the war.
Although it lasted little more than five hours, the Battle of Wilson’s Creek saw more than 2,300 causalities on both sides.
Today, history buffs make the pilgrimage to Wilson’s Creek Battlefield to explore the site of the historic battle. There is both a paved road tour and a handful of hiking trails that make it easy to check out the grounds.
The grounds on which the battlefield sits is also home to a Civil War Research Library.
While you might not be a history buff, you’ll probably want to get a brief overview of the battlefield’s hallowed past – especially if you’re hoping to experience the paranormal.
Visitors to the battlefield tell of a range of strange occurrences – from the sounds of exploding cannons to Civil War soldiers marching across the battlefield.
The wooded areas of the battlefield are often noisy – with chatter – after the sun goes down. Those voices are said to be of the soldiers, whose spirits remain on Wilson’s Creek to this day.
Don’t be surprised if you feel a strange coldness come over you either, even when it’s warm outside. That’s just another common occurrence on this haunted battlefield.
