Small town Mississippi is full of hidden gems – and Sciple’s Water Mill is one of them. The family owned mill was opened more than two centuries ago! Still in operation today, it’s one of the nation’s oldest mills. Luckily, it’s open daily for self-guided tours. Take a look:
When it comes to interesting sites from the past, it doesn’t get much more historic than Sciple’s Water Mill.
Not only is it one of Mississippi’s most historic sites, but the mill is actually the "the oldest commercially operated water mill in the U.S."
The mill was first opened in 1790 and has been in operation ever since.
Running the mill has been a family affair for the Sciples since purchasing it back in 1840.
More than two centuries have passed since the water mill was established on Running Tiger Creek in DeKalb – and not much has changed, including the price for grinding corn or wheat.
Just like the sign says, the charge for grinding corn or wheat hasn’t changed since 1790.
The mill accepts grain for milling on Saturdays only; however, the grounds are open every day during daylight hours for self-guided tours.
Should a Sciple family member be on site when you visit, they’ll most likely show you around, as the family is known for their hospitality. If you’re lucky enough to get a guided tour, you can peek inside the mill house, which is full of 19th century tools.
Regardless of when you visit, you can purchase some of the mill’s flour and grits thanks to a product cabinet with an "honor box."
Simply take the products you want and leave your money in the honor box.
The mill’s grounds also include the Water Mill Opry. Open on Saturday nights, it’s the place to go for live music, home-cooked food, and an ol’ fashioned good time.
