Oftentimes, Mississippi is overlooked and underrated; however, the state actually has a lot to offer (which is no surprise to those of us who already call Mississippi home). From a low cost of living to an amazing culture and everything in between, here are 11 reasons that living in Mississippi is the best, and why everyone should move here.
1. Low cost of living.
After a recent study, The Tax Foundation found the buying power of $100 varies by as much as 25% throughout the country. Another finding of the study? That $100 goes the furthest in Mississippi.
2. Educational opportunities.
When it comes to continuing your education, Mississippi has got you covered. The state is home to over 50, (yes, that’s right, 50) colleges, universities, and technical schools.
3. Live rurally, play in a city.
Just because much of Mississippi is rural it doesn’t mean residents miss out on big city amenities. With large cities like Jackson, Hattiesburg, Biloxi, and Gulfport, there’s access to great entertainment, nightlife, amazing restaurants, and more.
4. No traffic.
And since most of Mississippi is rural, it means that traffic jams are a pretty rare occurrence.
5. Wide open spaces.
Between the numerous state parks, national forests, and wildlife reserves, Mississippi is the perfect place for those looking to enjoy the outdoors and the peace and quiet that comes along with it.
6. An abundance of hospitality.
There’s a reason a Mississippian has never met a stranger or that the state is known as the Hospitality State. Residents are not only polite but genuinely friendly and will always welcome newcomers with open arms and big smiles.
7. Great neighbors.
Neighbors in Mississippi are much more than neighbors; they’re family. And you’ll quickly learn this after you’re welcomed to the neighborhood with numerous home cooked meals accompanied by offers to help with anything you may need. And nothing beats the feeling of security that comes along with knowing your neighbors are looking out for you.
8. A sense of community.
An extension of friendly neighbors, a sense of community just comes along with living in Mississippi. From neighborhood block parties to everyone lending a helping hand to a family in need, Mississippians come together in good times and bad.
9. History is alive.
From antebellum homes to Civil War battlefields to museums, history is very much alive in Mississippi, allowing residents to immerse themselves in the past and learn about the state and country in a hands-on way.
10. Delicious food.
Between the catfish, barbecue, hot tamales, and slugburgers, no other state can compare to Mississippi when it comes to amazing local specialties. And anyone that’s tried the food knows it’s reason enough to move to the state.
11. A rockin’ music scene.
The state of Mississippi has quite the impressive music scene; something which many out-of-towners may not realize. Not only is our state the birthplace of both the King and the Blues, but Oxford’s music scene is comparable to that of Texas and Georgia.
