Out of all the sounds that are iconic of Mississippi, I think the sounds of mockingbirds in Mississippi are the most nostalgic. These bold birds love to sing, and their songs can be heard in just about every backyard in the Magnolia State. Did you know the mockingbird is the state bird of Mississippi? Let’s learn some more fun facts about mockingbirds, shall we?
Northern mockingbirds are one of the most common backyard birds in Mississippi.
Mockingbirds are found all over the country, but they prefer the South (I mean…same). Specifically, mockingbirds are more common in the southeastern states. It’s the state bird of five states! In addition to being Mississippi’s state bird, it’s also Florida, Texas, Arkansas, and Tennessee have made the mockingbird their state bird.
Their scientific name, Mimus polyglottos, means “many-tongued mimic.” They have quite the repertoire and it’s estimated that they have more than 200 different types of songs.
Male mockingbirds tend to do most of the singing, but the females have been known to chime in, especially to establish winter territories.
Northern Mockingbirds are easy to identify. They have a grey and white body and a tail that sticks straight out. They don't look (or sound) like any other bird around!
Males and females look the same. Females might be slightly smaller, but they're pretty tricky to tell apart. If you hear one singing a tune, it's probably a male. Male mockingbirds tend to do most of the singing, but the females have been known to chime in, especially to establish winter territories.
These birds eat a variety of insects, berries, and other small fruits. If you have a bird feeder in your backyard, then you know all too well that mockingbirds will gladly swing by to feast on your birdseed!
They can be pretty territorial. I have a bird feeder with regular cardinal, blue jay, and chickadee appearances. Once the mockingbird found it, it chased off anything that would try to land on the feeder! To add insult to injury, they have a facial expression that looks like they want to speak to the manager.
Mockingbirds might be the boldest bird of the flock. Just look at this one catching a ride on a red-tailed hawk!
Their bold behavior and powerful vocal ability have made them a standard backyard bird for many folks in Mississippi. Do you have memories of listening to the mockingbirds?
